  • Plant a Memorial Tree
One of the most important markers that we can lay down is a symbol for a loved one who has passed on. Something that can encapsulate their spirit and represent them to us.

One of the most powerful ways of doing this, has always been I feel to plant a tree memorial. Tree’s have always been something special to mankind, they represent strength, a connection to the earth, they inspire peaceful feelings. There is nothing more powerful that contemplating ones existence in among tree’s. To Plant a  tree memorial is to create a living monument to a person. A memorial tree can still be growing in a 1000 years.

To plant a Tree Memorial  you need to look at the type of tree that you are going to set, and the local conditions. For example, some trees, such as Oaks prefer mildly acidic soil, but are very durable as long as they are not exposed to prolonged drought conditions. If you are based in upstate New York, then you would be best advised to not  plant a tree memorial Magnolia or Dogrose both of which fair better in the south.

Look at the are that you are going to plant a tree memorial – is it in an area that may be developed in years to come. Are there powerlines running nearby. If it is a smaller back garden, then it would be wiser to go for a tree memorial, such as an apple tree, or a cherry tree. Both of whom give beautiful blossoms and are a wonderful focal point in a garden.

For me one og the great things about tree memorial  is that when they are planted in a field, a monocultural environment becomes a thriving and living woodland. Birds start to return, woodland flowers and other animals start to make the trees and the area, a home once more. It is more than just planting a tree memorial, it is the creation of a living memorial, where the sum of the parts, is truly greater than the whole. I plant wild flowers and different woodland plants, to help nature in this regard.

I can’t wait to see squirrels and wood peckers, kingfishers and other wildlife return and make these tree’s their home.
